The Beynon Centre at New Cross Hospital was the first endoscopy unit in the country to start bowel cancer screening in 2006 and continues to be at the forefront of screening initiatives. We take part in national programmes to improve early diagnosis and patient care and are one of only eight sites nationally selected as an early adopter of the lower FIT threshold for bowel cancer screening. The threshold has been reduced from 120 to 80 micrograms of blood in a stool sample, enabling more patients with lower levels of blood to be offered further investigation. This has the potential to support the earlier detection of colorectal cancer and polyps, which can sometimes develop into cancer, helping patients in our area access investigation and treatment sooner.
