John’s Campaign

Hospital stays can be challenging for anyone, but they can be especially distressing for people living with dementia or cognitive impairment. Having a familiar face nearby can help them feel safe and less anxious.

John’s Campaign was co-founded by Nicci Gerrard in memory of her father Dr John Gerrard, and Julia Jones in memory of her mother June, to encourage hospitals to work closely with carers to provide more personalised care and better outcomes.

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust support John’s Campaign. If you care for someone with dementia or cognitive impairment, you are welcome to stay with them on the ward during the day or night, without being limited by visiting hours. This is your choice—it is not expected if you are unable to do so.

A carer is anyone who provides unpaid support to a friend or family member who cannot manage without help.

If the person you care for is coming into hospital or already admitted, please speak to a member of staff. Specialist dementia and delirium nurses are also available to offer advice and support.
