A gastroscopy is a simple procedure used to look inside your upper digestive system. This includes your food pipe (oesophagus), stomach, and the first part of your small intestine.

A thin, flexible tube with a small camera on the end (called an endoscope) is gently passed through your mouth and into your stomach. This allows the doctor or specialist nurse to see clear images and check for any problems.

A colonoscopy is a simple procedure used to look inside your large bowel (colon and rectum).

During the procedure, a slim, flexible tube with a camera is carefully guided through your back passage. This enables the doctor or specialist nurse to view the lining of your bowel in detail and identify any abnormalities.

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a simple test used to examine the lower part of your large bowel, including the rectum and the left side of the colon.

During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube with a camera is gently inserted through your back passage. This allows the doctor or specialist nurse to look closely at the bowel lining and check for any changes or concerns.

An ERCP is a specialist procedure used to examine and treat problems affecting the bile ducts, pancreas, and gallbladder.

During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through your mouth into your stomach and small intestine. The doctor can then use X-rays and special instruments to identify and treat issues such as blockages, stones, or narrowing in the bile ducts.

An endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a specialist test used to look closely at your digestive system and the surrounding organs, such as the pancreas and bile ducts.

During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube with a camera and ultrasound probe is passed through your mouth into your stomach and small intestine. This allows the doctor or specialist nurse to create detailed images and assess any areas of concern more clearly.

A bronchoscopy is a procedure used to examine the airways and lungs.

During the test, a thin, flexible tube with a camera is gently passed through your nose or mouth and into your lungs. This allows the doctor or specialist nurse to look at your airways and identify any problems more clearly.

An EBUS is a procedure used to examine the airways and nearby lymph nodes within the chest.

During the test, a thin, flexible tube with a camera and ultrasound probe is passed through your mouth into your lungs. This allows the doctor to view the airways and use ultrasound to assess surrounding areas in more detail.

HALO ablation is a treatment used to remove abnormal cells from the lining of the food pipe (oesophagus), often caused by a condition called Barrett’s oesophagus.

During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube is passed through your mouth into the oesophagus. A small device is then used to deliver controlled heat to the affected area to remove the abnormal cells and allow healthy tissue to grow back.

This is a specialised procedure used to look directly inside the bile ducts.

During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube is passed through your mouth into your digestive system. A very small camera is then guided into the bile ducts, allowing the doctor to see the area clearly and, if needed, take samples or treat problems such as stones or narrowing.

Transnasal endoscopy is a procedure used to examine your upper digestive system, including your food pipe and stomach.

During the test, a very thin, flexible tube with a camera is gently passed through your nose rather than your mouth. This allows the doctor or specialist nurse to view the area comfortably and check for any problems.

A capsule endoscopy is a test used to examine the inside of your small intestine.

Instead of using a tube, you swallow a small capsule about the size of a tablet, which contains a tiny camera. As it passes naturally through your digestive system, it takes thousands of images that are recorded and reviewed by your healthcare team to check for any problems.

In some cases, you may first be given a patency capsule. This is a dissolvable capsule (without a camera) used to check that your bowel is clear and that it is safe for the camera capsule to pass through without getting stuck.

A PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) is a procedure used to place a feeding tube directly into your stomach.

During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through your mouth into your stomach to guide the placement of the feeding tube through the skin of your abdomen. This allows nutrition, fluids, and medication to be given directly into the stomach when eating and drinking is not possible or safe.
