#DiscovertheNHS – Under 16s Work Experience

The NHS Futures Zone, is a bespoke training centre run by the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust based within The University of Wolverhampton Science Park. The Futures Zone includes an interactive clinical skills suite alongside training facilities

Whilst the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) understands the benefits of work experience and are committed to providing such opportunities, it is not possible for work experience participants under the age of 16 years to enter the main hospital/community areas.

We therefore invite people under the age of 16 to join us at the Futures Zone and take part in our ‘Discover the NHS’ programmes.

These action packed 4 day programmes, designed in conjunction with health professionals, are aimed at those who are seriously considering working within the NHS and will enable you to get “hands on” experience within a safe environment.

All available dates for 2025 are now closed. Dates for 2026 will be advertised in November 25

Please note requests outside of the list below will not be considered

If you are interested in booking bespoke sessions, form 1 day to 4 days, for your education establishment please email rwh-tr.nhsfutures@nhs.net for further information.

#ChooseMyNHS is a four-five week employment programme aimed at adults, 18 and above, who are unemployed or underemployed and consists of classroom-based training alongside hands on work experience placements.

We work in partnership with The Prince’s Trust and The Back2Work Group on these programmes.  The Get Into Hospital Services Programme (The Prince’s Trust) is open to those aged 18-30 and the Step Into Work Programme (Back2Work) is open to anyone 19 or over.

The programme allows participants to grow in confidence, improve their employment skills, and gain valuable work experience in various roles within a busy working hospital.

Participants undertake training sessions such as resilience, communication skills, team building and workplace etiquette alongside a work placement.  They also complete specific practical skills training enabling them to be safely “hands on” during their placement. For example, Health Care Support Workers will complete patient moving and handling, patient observations and bed making training whilst those based in admin areas will undertake PAS training.

Programmes are currently offered in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Health Care Support Workers
  • Catering
  • Administration
  • Laboratories
  • Warehousing
  • Portering
  • House Keeping
  • Waste Management

These programmes can potentially lead to the offer of paid work within the Trust should participants successfully complete the programme, with a recommendation from their manager.*

Programmes currently run four times a year:

Get Into hospital Service – April/May and September/October

Step Into Work – January/February and July/August
