Starting your career

Work experience

Are you:

  • interested in a career in health?
  • in education and unsure what pathway to take?
  • currently not in education, employment or training?

Start your journey with NHS Futures at RWT.

Our mission is to give local people opportunities to discover and explore the multitude of roles we offer – inspiring them to choose a career in the NHS.

We work with education, businesses and charities so that you can discover what working in the NHS is like and explore if it’s right for you.

Work experience is a great opportunity to test a career in the NHS and gain experience being in a work environment. This is invaluable for shaping your future.

Many university courses now require you to evidence any work experience you have completed, as part of the application process.

The NHS Futures Team has been awarded the Gold Award Work Experience Quality Standard from Health Education England. We are very proud of this award as it validates the excellence in the programmes we offer.

James Hartshorn, 16, worked in the Ophthalmology Department at New Cross Hospital as part of his work experience placement with RWT.

The keen amateur boxer, ranked third in the country in his age and weight class, has ambitions to turn professional. However, he was keen to experience the world of work and understand what pathways are available if his sporting dream does not work out.

He spent his week supporting the team as they carried out scans, as well as manning the phones to carry out follow up calls with patients who did not attend their appointments.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed it – it’s been a good experience. It’s important to get a taste of what the 9-5 outside my sport looks like and to know there are a lot of different options out there. It’s a great team here and they’ve really welcomed me.”
