Stroke

The stroke service delivers care to Wolverhampton, Walsall, South Staffordshire and Cannock. At New Cross Hospital, we have a 39-bedded stroke unit, consisting of 12 hyper acute beds and 27 acute stroke beds.

Inpatient rehabilitation is based at three sites:

  • West Park Hospital
  • Cannock Chase Hospital
  • Hollybank House (for Walsall residents).

We also have access to both an Early Supported Discharge team and a Community Stroke Team, which provide continued care to patients following their discharge from hospital. In addition, we operate a comprehensive 24-hour thrombolysis service and a seven-day Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) clinic. Patients deemed suitable for stroke thrombectomy are referred to University Hospital North Midlands (UHNM) for specialist intervention.

Where we are based

The Hyper Acute Stroke Unit is situated on Ward C21 at New Cross Hospital. The Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) Clinic is located on Ward C23, adjacent to Ward C21. The nearest car park is location P3.

How to access the service

If appropriate, a referral to the stroke service will be made by a qualified healthcare professional.

Referrals to the TIA Clinic should be made by a clinician via the TIA Clinic Referral Form and send to rwh-tr.stroke.spoa@nhs.net.

Please note it is essential that all information required in the referral form is completed by the referring clinician. This enables the clinical team to receive all essential information to triage the referral appropriately and prioritise clinic appointments to ensure patient safety. Incomplete forms will be returned to the referrer.
