A new £11 million, state-of-the-art pharmacy aseptic unit, which will prepare lifesaving medicines, is set to open in Wolverhampton next year.
As the only facility of its kind in the Black Country, it will play a pivotal role in delivering faster and more personalised treatments at scale for patients at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. A recruitment drive to support the opening of the new unit has been launched.
An Aseptic Unit is a highly controlled environment where injectable medications are prepared to the highest standards.
These include ready-to-administer chemotherapy, intravenous nutrition, antibiotics, and cutting-edge treatments used in clinical trials.
Approximately 2,000 chemotherapy doses will be produced for patients each month, along with a wide range of other ready-made injectable medications.
The unit will further support research across the Trust through the preparation of investigational medicinal products (IMPs) for clinical trials.
Angela Davis, Clinical Director of Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation at RWT, said: “A new chapter is about to begin in Wolverhampton, and we are all incredibly excited about the opening of this new unit.
“Over the next 12 months, we will be commissioning a state-of-the-art pharmacy aseptic unit, designed to help us meet growing demand and deliver even higher standards of patient care.
“We are expanding our team of passionate and skilled pharmacists, technicians and support staff, who will help shape this new service from the very beginning.
“We have jobs available as a Higher Level Technician, Assistant Technical Officer, Quality Assurance Support Officer.
“The unit offers a purpose-built, modern environment for our staff, along with opportunities for future employment and career development in a wide variety of roles.
“Most importantly, this investment represents a significant commitment to improving patient outcomes. By increasing our capacity and bringing cutting-edge production
capabilities to Wolverhampton, we can ensure that patients receive the treatments they need more quickly, safely, and closer to home.
“We are proud to be leading the way for the Black Country and look forward to the positive impact this facility will have on our community for many years to come.”
