Maternity Support Workers (MSWs) are being recognised today as The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust marks the annual focus on their invaluable roles.
Promoted by the Royal College of Midwives, Maternity Support Workers’ Day celebrates the vital contribution MSWs make to families during pregnancy, birth and early parenthood, across both hospital and community services.
MSWs play a key role in supporting Midwives and caring for women, newborns and families. Their work can include providing emotional support, helping with feeding, making routine observations, preparing equipment and assisting with day-to-day care on wards and in clinics.
While responsible for their own actions, all care they provide is delegated and supervised by a Registered Midwife, forming an essential part of safe and high-quality maternity care.
As part of this year’s celebrations, Chloe, who joined the Trust as an MSW almost eight years ago, explains why she chose the role.
She said: “I started as a Healthcare Assistant before progressing, which has been a great journey. At first, I could only support mums, but now I’m also trained to care for babies. It’s lovely to be able to look after both. The job is demanding but incredibly rewarding – I love being able to support babies, whether they are well or poorly.”
“For anyone thinking about becoming an MSW, I’d say strong communication skills are essential – you need to feel confident talking to families and working with a multidisciplinary team. And if you’re naturally caring, you’ll fit right into this role.”
Tracy Palmer, Director of Midwifery and Neonatal Services, said: “Our Maternity Support Workers play a vital role in providing safe, compassionate care. Their dedication and teamwork are at the heart of the support we offer to women, babies and families every day. We deeply appreciate their commitment and are proud to celebrate them today.”
