RWT shortlisted for national awards

Teams at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) are celebrating after being shortlisted for two national awards recognising their sustainability efforts.

The Government Commercial Function Awards 2025 recognise staff across the public sector who have gone above and beyond, showcasing exceptional skill and talent within the commercial community.

RWT colleagues are finalists in two categories:

The Estates Development and Estates and Facilities Teams have been recognised for their pioneering work to make hospital sites greener and more energy efficient. Together, they have helped to cut carbon emissions by nine per cent, even though the hospital estate has grown by 12 per cent in recent years. Their work includes using more solar power, switching to green energy, and reducing the use of fossil fuels.

Stew Watson, Group Director of Estates Development, said: “We’re really proud to be recognised nationally for the work we’re doing to make our hospitals more sustainable. This is about making responsible choices that protect our environment, improve resilience and create long-term savings for patient care.”

Sian Fumarola has led NHS teams across the region to choose safer, more sustainable products that benefit staff, patients and the environment. Her leadership has transformed clinical procurement into a value-driven, sustainable service – achieving real results such as cutting glove use, lowering carbon emissions, and switching to more sustainable alternatives.

She said: “This recognition is a real honour and a reflection of the teamwork across Wolverhampton, Walsall and North Midlands. For me, leadership is about empowering others – and when we do that, we can create space to focus on supporting safe, high-quality care while reducing the environmental impact of the products and services we use.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on Thursday 27 November. See the full list of finalists.
