Outpatients

If you have an appointment at one of our hospitals or clinics, but do not need to stay overnight, it means you’re being treated as an outpatient or a day patient.

You may be having an appointment for treatment, diagnosis, or a procedure.

When you are referred to us for tests or treatment, you will receive a confirmation letter. The letter will include all the information you need to prepare your appointment.

Outpatient appointments are held in several different locations. Please check your appointment letter to make sure you attend the right department.

Your first appointment

If your GP wishes to refer you to a specialist, you can use the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) to choose the place, time and date for your first appointment.

Your GP can book it while you’re at the surgery, or you can book yourself:

  • book online using the appointment request letter your GP gives you
  • phone the NHS e-Referral Service line on 0345 608 8888 (open Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm, and on weekends and bank holidays from 8am to 4pm)

Some appointments need to booked directly with the service. If this is the case, your GP will give you a letter with the number you need to call to book and the opening hours for the service.

If you are being referred to us from another hospital, we’ll contact you to arrange your appointment once we have processed your referral.

In all cases, when an appointment becomes available, this will be booked in and a letter will be sent to you confirming the details.

If you have a smartphone or device, you can download and register to use the MyRWT app, where you can get all your appointment information in one place.

When you have registered to MyRWT, your appointment confirmation may come through as a text message with a link to where you can view your letter electronically.

In this section of the website, you can learn more about how to prepare for your outpatient appointment and what to expect from your visit.
