Acute Oncology

The Acute Oncology Service is a specialist multi-professional team of oncologists, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and radiotherapists, who offer advice, guidance and support for clinical teams who are caring for oncology patients who need unplanned admission to the Trust.

The service provides timely and specialist care to patients presenting with cancer related symptoms or cancer treatment related toxicities.

The service mainly supports in situations where:

  • Oncology patients attend assessment portals or need an unplanned or emergency hospital admission
  • Patients present with acute toxicities resulting from anti-cancer treatments (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, biological therapies, immunotherapies and others)
  • Suspected metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC)
  • Patients require investigation for suspected cancer of unknown primary
