Healthcare scientists use a range of science, engineering and technology skills to prevent, treat and diagnose a range of medical conditions.

At RWT, we have a busy Medical Physical and Clinical Engineering Department composed of clinical scientists, technologists, admin colleagues and trainees.

The main sections of the department are:

Radiotheraphy physics

Our Radiotherapy Physics service is based in a purpose built building in the Deanesly Centre. Current equipment and software includes:

Two Varian Clinac 2100 C/D with millenium MLC
Two Elekta Precise with beam modulator heads, portal imaging and Elekta cone-beam CT (One with CBCT)
Two Siemens CT scanners (One standard and one wide bore)

Non-Imaging Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine department at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust uses modern equipment and techniques to provide a variety of treatments for patients, set in a comfortable and friendly environment.

A range of in-vivo and in-vitro tests are provided by the department, which also undertakes radionuclide therapy for both malignant and non-malignant diseases. The nuclear medicine department also works closely with the clinical research team and has been involved in clinical trial studies to improve patient cancer treatments.

The department has its own radiopharmacy which provides substantial support to the Nuclear Imaging department. This facility features a clean room and 3 Grade A isolators for the production of radioactive pharmaceuticals, and a private treatment area.

Diagnostic Radiology

The Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection Department is responsible for advising on and implementing the statutory requirements covering all use of diagnostic and therapeutic ionising radiations within the Trust, other NHS community services, and some private contracts within the West Midlands region.

A Schedule of quality control testing is performed on all radiological and imaging equipment within the Trust, NHS community, and other contracts as required by guidance and statutory requirements. The team also has expertise in non-ionising radiations, including laser and ultra-violet therapies, ultrasound, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Clinical Engineering

This team provides clinical support services to all Wolverhampton hospital and community sites, as well as managing the clinical service of Bone Densitometry.

Our motivated and highly qualified technologists can commission, repair, test and calibrate a broad range of medical device types, makes and models.

The team works across adult and children’s services, including in the community. Our team of experienced clinical technologists work in areas such as:
