School Nurses

What we do


School Nurses offer a service to pupils who attend the schools in Wolverhampton that are state funded, Academies, Free Schools, Special Schools, Pupil Referral Units, The Youth Justice Service and children and young people (CYP) who are educated at home. We are based in health centres across the city and work closely with schools and other services. School Nurses are registered nurses who have additional training and experience in child development and specialist areas, including the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) qualification. Public Health Associates support the School Nurses with the delivery of the 5-19 Healthy Child Programme. Sexual Health Workers also support the School Nurses with the delivery of RSE.

Where are we based


The service is based at: Phoenix Health Centre Parkfield Road Wolverhampton WV4 6ED Our services are also delivered from:

• Community Health Centres including the Gem Centre, Bilston Health Centre, Pendeford Health Centre, Primrose Health Centre, and Whitmore Reans Health Centre

• Wolverhampton schools including primary, secondary, special schools and pupil referral units.

• Youth Justice Service

• Clients’ own home

The service is flexible and delivered in the most appropriate setting dependant on the needs of the child/young person, which includes schools, home, Youth Justice Service and other community settings.

High Impact Areas for School Aged Years


The high impact areas for school aged years describe areas where School Nurses can have a significant impact on health and wellbeing and improving outcomes for children, young people, families and communities.

  • Offer drop-ins in secondary schools
  • Provide 1-1 support
  • Promote good emotional health and wellbeing
  • Support children and young people with transition
  • Provide information and signposting
  • Deliver education sessions e.g., healthy relationships, sexual health, contraception, smoking, alcohol, and substance misuse
  • Provide 1-1 support
  • Provide information and signposting
  • Complete health assessments  (cant get the dot to work)
  • Deliver health education and health promotion sessions e.g., healthy eating advice/promote good oral health
  • Complete National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP – Reception year and year 6)

  • Early support and family help assessments Support children and young people with complex and additional health and wellbeing needs:

How to access the service


We have a Single Point of Access (SPoA) for you to contact your School Nursing service. Referrals can be made by a child, a parent/carer or family member, school staff, or any health or social care professional.

  • Young people aged 11-19 can text a School Nurse for confidential advice and support via our ChatHealth Service – 07507 332 631. They can also speak with a School Nurse at the drop- in sessions in secondary schools.
