Children's Services (Children and Young People in Care (CYPiC))

What we do

The Children and Young People in Care (CYPiC) service is responsible for ensuring health needs are met for our CYPiC. Our service is needed to support Wolverhampton CYPiC and those from other areas who live in Wolverhampton. We complete health assessments, offer advice and training for professionals.

Our aim is to ensure all children and young people’s voices are at the heart of our service provision, have their health needs assessed and monitored, understand their health identity as they approach adulthood and that professionals understand the specific needs of our children and young people.

Where we are based

The service is based at:

The Gem Centre,
Neachells Lane,
Wolverhampton,
WV11 3PG

Our services are also delivered from:

  • Wolverhampton Family Hubs
  • New Cross Hospital including Children’s Outpatients A22, Children’s Ward A21, Paediatric Assessment Unit and the Emergency Department
  • Patients’ own home

How to access the service

The allocated social worker for each CYPiC is responsible for making all referrals for a health assessment to be undertaken as soon as a child enters care.

Alongside completing the statutory health assessments required for Wolverhampton CYPiC, we also complete health assessments for CYP who are placed in Wolverhampton by other local authorities and offer support/have oversight of their health needs as required.

We offer supervision to practitioners and deliver training which covers issues such as the additional needs our CYP may have, how we can best support them and most importantly ensuring their voices are heard and at the heart of any assessment or intervention.

Our dedicated Specialist Nurse offers health advice and signposting for 18–25-year-olds who have previously been in care under Wolverhampton Local Authority.

In addition, we undertake drop-ins at New Cross Hospital 2-3 times weekly, visiting departments such as the Childrens Ward and Emergency Department to offer advice and support for staff in relation to CYPiC who are in the departments.
