Bowel Cancer Screening

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. Screening is a simple and effective way to diagnose bowel cancer or early signs before it is serious. This helps to prevent unnecessary deaths.

The Wolverhampton Bowel Cancer Screening Centre is based at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton and covers the eligible population of Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall Cannock and the peninsula of South Staffordshire.

The service provides new patient and surveillance clinics weekly. The bowel cancer screening procedures are undertaken at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton; Cannock Chase Hospital, Cannock; and Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley.

How to access the service

If you are aged 50 to 74 and registered with a GP, you will be sent a bowel cancer screening FIT kit every two years through the post. This is also called a faecal immunochemical test (FIT). If you haven’t received your kit and would like one, or have any questions about the kit, please call the freephone number 0800 707 6060.

If you’re aged 75 or older, you won’t automatically be sent a kit; however, you can still request one by calling 0800 707 6060.

If you have an abnormal bowel cancer screening FIT result and live in the catchment area, we will offer you an appointment at one of our four sites. The appointment will be with a specialist screening practitioner (SSP) within two weeks of your test result. At this appointment, the SSP will:

  • Explain why the test results may be abnormal.
  • Explain why you may need a further procedure.

The SSP will handle your care throughout the process.
