Volunteers described as “the heartbeat” of The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust have won an award for their dedication to helping patients, staff and the wider community.
They were recognised at the Express & Star’s Black Country Heroes Awards ceremony, an event designed to put a spotlight on the people who make the area so special.
Last night’s event, in its second year, was held at Molineux Stadium and hosted by radio personality and ‘Mr Wolverhampton’ Dicky Dodd, to highlight the work and service of individuals and organisation who typify the Black Country spirit. It is supported by the JW Gough Group and other six other Black Country-based companies sponsored the 12 accolades given out.

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust Charity and Volunteering Service were honoured to receive the King’s Award for volunteering in November 2024, this is the equivalent to an MBE and the highest recognition of the work they do. The charity, along with volunteers and supporters, goes above and beyond what the NHS provides. This includes creating sensory rooms, outdoor gardens for rehabilitation, providing medical equipment and supporting clinical staff on the wards.
Before being announced as winners, the audience was told:
“The group is the heartbeat of the Trust, giving their time, energy, and compassion to support patients, staff, and the wider community. Whether assisting on wards, helping with events, fundraising, or simply offering a listening ear, their presence brings comfort, connection, and joy to those who need it most. “
Professor Martin Levermore MBE, Chair of the Trust’s YOUR RWTC Charity, said: ” I admire all your compassion, support and professionalism on a daily basis and I am proud of every single one of you.”
Andrew Rice, Head of Patient Voice for Walsall Healthcare and The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, said: “Our Trust volunteers are a real asset to the NHS, helping provide support in a number of ways that is appreciated by everyone who uses or works in healthcare services.
“They fully deserve this award as valued volunteers who make a meaningful difference with every hour’s service they provide.”
Amanda Winwood, Charity Development Manager for YOUR RWTC, added: “The volunteers and our supporters truly are the heartbeat of our Trust, and we’d like to sincerely thank them for their continued support.”
