Sports Day scores a hit

Sports Day - Diabetes Type 1

Children and young people with type 1 diabetes have taken part in the first-ever Paediatrics Sports Day in the area.

The event was organised by The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust in partnership with the Wolves Foundation and Yo! Active.

It was held at Aldersley Leisure Centre and saw more than 20 youngsters enjoy a variety of fun sporting activities, including football, athletics, and other games.

Jess Rhead, Lead Diabetes CNS at the Trust, said: “It was fantastic to see so many of our patients and their families coming together to enjoy this event.

“The aim of the day was to show children and families that Type 1 diabetes should never be a barrier to being active, while also providing them with support and confidence in managing their condition during exercise.

“Living with type 1 diabetes can sometimes feel isolating, but days like this show children that they are not alone and that their condition does not have to limit what they do.

“We’re really grateful to Wolves Foundation and Yo! Active for their support in making this happen.”

One of the participants taking part in the day was Thomas, who has type 1 diabetes and described the event as ‘amazing’.

The 15-year-old added: “It’s good for social links and you get to know people who also have the same condition as you. I love exercising, and it has been amazing.”

The paediatric team hopes to make this a yearly event.

Jess added: “The success of the day highlights the importance of supporting young patients and their families to help build confidence, make friends and see exercise as something to be enjoyed – not feared.”
