Outpatients re-opening

An outpatients building at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton has reopened following major roof repair works.

The building was lined with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), which is known to be susceptible to structural failure when exposed to moisture.

As a result, services were temporarily relocated while the RAAC was removed and the roof fully replaced.

Stew Watson, Group Director of Estates Development at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, said: “When it was confirmed that the roof of our main Outpatients building at New Cross Hospital contained RAAC, we immediately set about relocating services so vital remedial work could go ahead and to ensure our patients and staff were not exposed to any risk.

“Our Trust was awarded £6 million of funding from NHS England to replace the roof, remove the RAAC, and temporarily house services elsewhere on site.

“We would like to thank our patients and staff for their patience and understanding while this work has taken place over the past 12 months.”

Angela Povey, Senior Sister for Outpatients, said the re-opening meant teams were now back together under one roof.

She added: “Re-opening Outpatients creates a much safer and more efficient environment. We now have new clinics and observation rooms, and we are excited to welcome both patients and staff back.”
