Kelly Kusinski, Urology Advanced Nurse Practitioner at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, will be taking part in a ‘March for Men’ to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer UK and support group BROS (Brothers Reaching Out to and for Support).
Taking place on Father’s Day (15 June), the walk aims to spark important conversations about men’s health, honour lost loved ones and raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer – a disease which affects one in eight white men and one in four black men.
Anyone is welcome to take part, and those wishing to be involved have the option of a two, five or 10 kilometre route around Wolverhampton’s West Park.
Kelly will be on hand during the walk to share information and guidance on prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing.
“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in males, but the disease is still not spoken about enough,” said Kelly.
“Hosting the walk on Father’s Day is timely as we’re encouraging people to walk in support of the men in their lives.
BROS Medals Group 2023
“There’s currently no health screening for prostate cancer so we’re trying to bring localised awareness of the disease, as well as push for a national screening programme for men. I see men come to clinic too late, which doesn’t need to happen. The earlier we carry out testing, the more the men we could save”.
Kelly has recently been an advocate for a national PSA screening programme and has attended The All Party Parliamentary Group at Westminster, which was set up to present the most up to date research and information regarding this.
She added: “I have worked with BROS since its conception in 2019 and attend its quarterly meetings as a continuous source of support for patients, family and friends. The group is doing incredible work to raise awareness for prostate cancer, particularly amongst black men.
“Money raised from the walk will be used to support local initiatives, with the rest going to Prostate Cancer UK”.
Registration opens at 9.30am at the Park Avenue entrance, with the walk beginning promptly at 10am. For enquiries, email: kelly.kusinski@nhs.net.
