Jo Weekes, Consultant Radiographer (Medical Physics Department) at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, was invited to speak at The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) Annual Conference in New Orleans, USA.
Jo was part of a panel of four invited experts from the UK, and her presentation was titled “The Development of Advanced Practice in Targeted Radionuclide Therapy for Radiographers, Technologists and Nurses in the UK.”
She spoke about Molecular Radiotherapy (MRT) which is a specialised form of treatment that is available within Oncology that utilises primarily beta and alpha radiation internally to target and destroy cancer cells.
It is a systemic treatment, meaning it travels through the bloodstream to reach the targeted cells throughout the body.
Jo, who has worked at RWT for eight years, said: “Due to the work I am involved in within the British Nuclear Medicine Society (BNMS) Molecular Radiotherapy Consortium and the BNMS Radiographers, Technologists and Nurses Committee I was invited to speak at this conference.
“I felt extremely honoured to be given this opportunity as it is recognised as the premier educational, scientific, research, and networking event in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging in the USA.
“The four-day event provides Physicians, Radiographers, Technologists, Radio-Pharmacists, laboratory professionals, and Scientists with an in-depth view of the latest research and development in the field of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Radiotherapy.
“My take home learning experiences from this event were the advanced clinical applications that are now available to transform patient care, the new Molecular Radiotherapy Procedures available in the USA which at present have not been approved by NICE in the UK, along with the networking opportunities with other professionals in the USA.
“It was a fantastic opportunity, and I was so grateful to attend.
“Naturally, I would like to implement some of the new applications and learning experiences I have gained from this conference in conjunction with my medical and clinical scientist colleagues who are involved in MRT at the RWT.”
Jo’s attendance at the conference was sponsored by British Nuclear Medicine Society and SNMMI.#
