Twelve new Infant Feeding Helpers have completed their training and are giving invaluable help and support to families on New Cross Hospital’s Maternity ward and in the community.
The 12 peer support volunteers are experienced breastfeeding parents who have been through nine weeks of training to ensure they have the practical skills, communication skills, and knowledge to be able to support families with feeding their babies.
Alexis Fullard, who was part of this group, said: “ I really enjoyed deepening my knowledge of breastfeeding and learning so much that will enable me to support parents who want to breastfeed.
“I’m really excited to now have the opportunity to make a difference in the feeding journeys of parents in Wolverhampton.”
Abi Rudge, who has also completed her training, said: “I really enjoyed getting together each week with other like-minded women who are passionate about breastfeeding and want to help support other parents on their feeding journey. It was so nice to share, chat and learn together.”
Poppy Davies is Breastfeeding Peer Support Co-ordinator for The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and she explained how important the role of the Infant Feeding Helpers is.
“Breastfeeding gives babies a brilliant start in life, giving them antibodies to strengthen their immunity to viruses and bacteria,” she said.
It also has benefits for mums and supports the mother-baby bonding experience.
“”But there can be challenges that come with breastfeeding, which is why practical support, tips and information can help make the world of difference. Our Infant Feeding Helpers have also been through breastfeeding highs and lows and are perfectly placed to understand how mums are feeling and share experiences.
“Congratulations to our 12 new recruits who are a real asset to our Trust!”
