Dr Saibal Ganguly, Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, and Dr Francina Schreuder, Obstetric Consultant, at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) won awards at this year’s Medical Educator Awards.

Dr Ganguly was awarded Educational Leader of the Year. The judging panel was highly impressed, describing him as “an exemplar in education leadership” for the Trust.

Dr Ganguly said: “Winning the National Educational Leader of the Year award is an amazing honour.

“This recognition shines a spotlight not just on my contributions but also celebrates the incredible efforts of our extraordinary team at RWT.

“It truly inspires me to strive for excellence and make a positive impact on our students, Doctors, Nurses, Allied Healthcare Professionals, and fellow educators.

“I’m so proud to represent my Trust and my wonderful colleagues as we work hand-in-hand to create a meaningful difference in our community.

“This recognition brings me immense pride and opens up excellent partnership and professional growth opportunities.

“It’s reassuring to know that this acknowledgement celebrates our hard work in transforming education to create a positive learning environment and empower everyone to reach their fullest potential.”

Dr Schreuder was named the winner of the Innovation in PG Education and Training category.

She was commended for her commitment to shaping the future of healthcare through education.

The judging panel highlighted her imaginative and innovative Christmas advent calendar which had daily training videos on neurodiversity.

It opened up conversations between staff members and means awareness of the issues women face is being widely discussed.

She said: “This award was totally unexpected and it is a great honour that the teaching advent calendars have been recognised at a national level.

“This style of teaching helps staff access in-depth teaching in a bite-size manner as and when suits them and as many times as they wish to revisit it.

“This is particularly important for the 2024 topic of neurodiversity, an area which has historically been poorly covered in the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum.

“Better trained staff will result in greater awareness and better patient care. This is especially important for the neurodivergent community, who frequently experience poor understanding and barriers to care.”

Dr Stephen Lord, Chair of Medical Education Leaders UK, said to them both: “We hope this achievement serves as a reminder of the incredible value of your efforts and motivates you to continue your outstanding contributions to the field.

“Medical education thrives because of individuals like you who go above and beyond to support learning, innovation, and excellence.”
