Community event empowers mums with vital support

New and expectant mums were educated and empowered at a community event highlighting the wide range of support available to families.

Held at the Graiseley Family Hub in Wolverhampton yesterday, the event was a collaboration between The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and the African Caribbean Community Initiative (ACCI).

It brought together women from diverse communities to explore essential knowledge and resources as they embark on motherhood.

Attendees took part in sessions on holistic health and wellbeing, baby safety demonstrations, infant feeding support, and guidance on prenatal, perinatal and postnatal care.

A range of community providers were also on hand to offer practical advice on managing finances, avoiding scams, accessing addiction support, and finding employment opportunities.

This marks the second successful event, with further sessions already being planned.

Sunita Banga, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Midwife at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, said: “These events provide a fantastic opportunity for parents to ask questions and access extra support.

“Through my outreach work, I aim to reach Black, Asian and minority ethnic women to ensure greater equity throughout their pregnancy journey.

“We know some mums face mental health or financial challenges, but there is help available—and our role is to make sure that information is communicated effectively.”

Elisha Frimpong, Community Network Development Manager at ACCI, added: “Our partnership with the Trust was born from an identified need within the community.

“With a rise in demand for perinatal mental health services, we are taking proactive steps to deliver crucial support right at the heart of the community.”

One expectant mum, 38 weeks pregnant, shared her experience after learning how to safely secure a baby in a car seat and practice pelvic floor exercises.

She said: “The demonstrations were really useful. It’s been so beneficial to learn these things ahead of my baby’s arrival.”
