Date of release: 17 October 2024
A former patient who says she owes her life to the NHS has thrown an elaborate thank you party to show her gratitude to the Wolverhampton teams.
Dr Yaa Victorine Ngamsha, known as Vicky
Dr Yaa Victorine Ngamsha – Vicky – is originally from Cameroon but came to the UK to get married in 2001, moving to Birmingham in 2007 and Bentley in Walsall a year later.
She was diagnosed with kidney failure and referred to The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust for treatment before having a kidney transplant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QE) in Birmingham in September last year.
The 51-year-old, who lost five of her brothers and sisters to kidney related disease in Cameroon, said she is so grateful to the NHS for saving her life.
She said: “The care I received at the QE before and during the transplant was incredible and the after care at New Cross the same. I would say I owe my life to them.
“It has been first class treatment. The Chronic Kidney Disease Team at New Cross Hospital feel like family.
“I was so scared when I had the diagnosis but the staff on C6 have been incredible. Nothing was too much trouble during the whole process and all the staff from those in the kidney unit to the Doctors, Nurses, Porters and everyone were wonderful.
“It is thanks to New Cross Hospital’s Home Dialysis Unit team that I received home dialysis for six months – which meant I didn’t have to come into the hospital. Then after the transplant I was seen every day until I recovered. They all really looked after me. What incredible staff.
“I am so grateful and humbled by my care I went on TV in Cameroon to talk about the incredible NHS and tell my story.”
The mother of three is a singer, dancer, motivational speaker and a graduate in Business and IT from the University of Wolverhampton.
She has released a music video on her Facebook and YouTube page entitled 'Thank you Britain.'
She held a party for NHS staff, family and friends at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wolverhampton with the evening reception at Darlaston Sports and Social Club.
Vicky added: “I wanted to give something back so thought I would hold a mass and reception in the evening where the staff who treated me or helped me were invited.
“It was a great event and I will continue to spread the word any way I can about how great my treatment was. Thank you to everyone involved in my care.”
