What is the Friends and Family Test?
A nationwide NHS initiative that offers every patient who receives care and treatment the opportunity to provide feedback on their experience.
Patients are asked whether they would recommend services to friends and family in need of similar care, which is an important reflection of the quality of care they received.
The Friends and Family Test is a quick and simple way to measure our services and understand the needs of our patients. Your feedback is valuable and counts in shaping our future and living our values.

How does it work?
Within 48 hours of leaving the hospital, you will be asked the following question to rate your experience:
‘How likely are you to recommend our service to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?’
You respond by choosing one of six options ranging from ‘extremely likely’ to ‘extremely unlikely’. You are then asked if you would like to explain your answer, so please take the opportunity to make suggestions, praise exceptional staff members or highlight improvement areas.
Your response is completely free of charge and may be asked either by text, phone call, online or post card.
Do I have to respond?
Your answer is completely voluntary and anonymous and will not be traced back to you. This question is asked purely to make sure patients are receiving the best care possible.
A family member or friend is welcome to answer the question on your behalf if you are unable to.
How does my feedback help?
Your feedback is rapidly analysed to identify any opportunities to improve our service and make sure patients are receiving the highest level of care. If your comments are complimentary, we will of course pass on your praise to staff members on your behalf.
Patient feedback is then combined and published monthly on NHS Choices website. This information is also sent to Ward Managers and Matrons for team discussions about great practise and improvement plans.
