Open day success

Date of release: 25 March 2025

More than 50 healthcare staff attended an open event to learn more about high-tech immersive simulation training and educational tools.

Simward demonstration

The first SimWard open day was held last week to show staff at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust the training opportunities and scenarios are open to them.

The SimWard and SimiGen use immersive technology to provide a multi-sensory learning space.

Some of the staff who attended included Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, students, and the Manual Handling Team.

Lucy Morse, Consultant Obstetrician and College Tutor, said the day was a great success.

Sister Nichola MacDuff, Respiratory Nurse Consultant, ran workshops on getting started with in-situ simulation, and Dr Richard Morse, Consultant Anaesthetist, ran a debrief masterclass.

Lucy said: “Live simulations ran all afternoon with the support of the SimWard and SimiGen faculties.

“Other highlights included staff being able to use hands-on task trainers such as the birth simulators, laparoscopy and eye surgery.

“The games room also featured a range of educational games developed by our simulation fellows.

“Another highlight was our tea trolley training demonstrations - perfect for busy areas where we share small snippets of learning, alongside much-needed refreshment.

“Our aim was to get the whole Trust excited about developing and furthering educational activities in all areas for all staff.”

Annabel Copeman, Consultant Paediatrician and Deputy Director of Medical Education for Quality, said: “We wanted to run the event to spark some interest and to spark some ideas about what staff may be able to deliver to their own areas.

“Simulation provides a safe environment for training and we are so proud to have the simulation suite here at the Trust for all our staff to use.”

Comments from attendees included:

“Really friendly, encouraging staff who were knowledgeable about SIM.”

“Made scenarios very open and didn’t make you feel pressured, lots of hands-on stuff too which was great.”
