The Tissue Viability Team at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust won the prestigious accolade for Innovation in Debridement at the Journey of Wound Care Awards 2025.
Tissue viability is a specialist area of wound care that focuses on skin and soft tissue wounds. This includes surgical wounds, leg ulcers or pressure ulcers.
Led by Usha Sharma, Tissue Viability Specialist Nurse, the team earned the award for its work using a specialised therapy called Veraflo to prevent patients from returning to Theatres.
Veraflo therapy removes damaged, dead or infected tissue from a wound, leading to healthy tissue being able to heal.
She said: “This achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and collaboration that has been at the heart of our work.”
Alongside surgical colleagues, the team has been able to save limbs and heal patients beyond expectations, leading to a significant improvement in patient outcomes.
The international awards were held at the Imperial War Museum in London, celebrating the excellence in research and practice while recognising outstanding achievements across the wound care community.
Usha added: “Our dynamic approach has driven us to think outside the box and this award reflects the collective effort of the team committed to making a meaningful difference in wound care.
“This achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and collaboration that has been at the heart of our work. I am excited for what’s ahead and look forward to continuing this journey of innovation and excellence.”
