Nursing leader receives award for dedication
Date of release: 13 November 2024
A nursing leader has received an award for her dedication and commitment to the NHS and has vowed to continue to inspire others.
Doreen Black, Head of Nursing Division 1 at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, was awarded the Mary Seacole Award at the Local Heroes and ‘Be Inspired Youth Awards’ organised by the Association of Jamaican Nationals.
This event celebrates the exceptional contributions of Jamaicans to the UK's societal fabric and was held at Aston Villa Football Club.
She said: “My mother came to the UK from Jamaica, so I was honoured and blown away to be given the Mary Seacole Award – named after a fellow Jamaican Nurse.
“It was a huge shock to find out I had won, and I feel so proud to have achieved this honour during Black History Month.
“My biggest passion is high standards of patient care and to do this I support nursing training and education. I believe succession planning is hugely important along with role modelling. You always need to be one step ahead to ensure safe, high-quality care is always delivered to our patients.
“To have my passion recognised and awarded is truly special.
“My hope is that I will continue to be an inspiration to all Nurses, and particularly those who look like me to pursue excellence in their chosen careers and support and develop others along the way.”
Doreen’s passion to support staff development and her transformational leadership style has resulted in numerous staff reaching their career potential and led to her being nominated and winning the Windrush 70 Top Leadership Award in 2018.
Doreen also received an award for Outstanding Contribution to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Social Care from the Royal College of Nursing in 2019.
Dr Beverly Lindsay, Chair of the Association of Jamaican Nationals, said: “My heartfelt congratulations to all winners – the often-unsung heroes in our local communities, those men, women, and young people who tirelessly work to serve. Your efforts are the true pillars of our community’s strength.”
