RWT's SimWard team has been shortlisted for three Health and Safety Journal (HSJ) Patient Safety Awards.

The annual event acknowledges the hard-working teams and individuals across the UK who are continually striving to deliver improved patient care.

The shortlist for RWT includes:
  1. International Medical Graduation Simulation (IMGSim) - ‘Harnessing a Human Factors Approach to Patient Safety’ category.
  2. Foundation Simulation - ‘Harnessing a Human Factors Approach to Patient Safety’ category.
  3. Paediatric In-situ Simulation - ‘Patient Safety Education and Training Award’ category.

Karishma Mann, Lead for Postgraduate Simulation Based Education/SimWard, said: “The simulation-based education delivered by SimWard Wolverhampton would not happen without the incredibly committed colleagues at RWT. This is a momentous occasion for the Trust.”

Simulation based education allows learning through interactive and immersive activities, by recreating clinical experience.

Dr Harjinder Kainth, Acute Medicine Consultant at RWT and Lead for IMGSim said: “Being shortlisted for a HSJ patient safety award comes at a time where innovation is essential for continued improvement in patient safety. Simulation based education is in increasing demand as a learning modality. IMG Sim is unique in its target audience and exemplifies the role and importance of human factors with regards to patient safety and quality of care.

“It is an honour to be shortlisted for a prestigious 2024 Patient Safety Award and be recognised by the HSJ for our work, passion and commitment to patient safety. We hope this inspires others with a passion in patient safety to come forward with their innovative ideas.”

Dr Richard Barlow, Acute Medicine Consultant at RWT and Lead for Foundation Simulation said: “I am thrilled for us to have been shortlisted for a HSJ award.

“It is well known how prestigious the HSJ awards programme is and to be shortlisted for one is credit to the hard work put in by whole team involved over the past 10 years.”

Dr Annabel Copeman, Consultant Paediatrician, said: “I am truly delighted that this programme has been nominated.

“The programme has received consistently positive feedback over 15 years about the sessions and they have ultimately led to the improvement of patient safety, so to get this nomination is a great acknowledgement of the fantastic work the team does.”

Winners will be announced during the awards ceremony in Manchester on 16 September 2024.
