Maria Glover, Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse Manager at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT), has won the Apprentice Awards 2024: Embracing Inclusion and Diversity – Leading on Innovation in their Organisation award from the University of Wolverhampton.
Following a 15-year break from the classroom, the 54-year-old is studying for her Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership. Maria will obtain this qualification when she sits her end-point assessment in September with the CMI.
Maria will graduate from the Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Management Studies – a two-year postgraduate diploma, which is the second level of Master’s education – on 11 September, 2024.
She starts her final year on 3 October for her Master of Business Administration (MBA) top-up, which will result in an MBA in Senior Leadership on 18 September 2025.
“I’ve always loved studying – I love opportunities for learning and development, both personally and professionally,” added Maria, whose team of 12 at New Cross Hospital sees an average of 300 patients per month.
“I decided to pursue a Master’s in Senior Leadership to improve my strategic vision, decision-making, and innovation in my role, ultimately improving patient care and team effectiveness.
Maria, who has been with RWT since 2015, has a lifelong passion for learning that hasn’t been dimmed by parenthood or the passing years. Her last time in the classroom was to complete a Leadership and Management Graduate Certificate at Staffordshire University in 2009.
“Returning to study after 15 years has been incredibly rewarding, reigniting my passion for learning and enhancing my professional skills,” she added.
After qualifying as a Registered General Nurse in 1993, Maria graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies from Staffordshire University in 2003 and gained a teaching qualification, a PGDip BSc (Hons), also from Staffordshire University, this year.
Maria, from Stafford, added: “Receiving this award is a testament to the power of innovation, the strength of leadership, and the beauty of inclusion and diversity.
“Together, we are creating a future where everyone has the opportunity to shine. I am thrilled.”
Maria, who has worked at RWT since 2015, was nominated for the award by Javin Dacosta, her Senior Lecturer and Degree Apprentice Coach, for embracing the learning.
Javin said: “Congratulations to Maria. She has made significant changes within the NHS, particularly with her work on the MyHeart app.
“The app will provide cardiac rehabilitation patients with access to healthcare professionals and allow them to self manage their cardiac condition Truly deserved!”
He added: “Maria has wholeheartedly embraced her personal development journey as a senior leader and has demonstrated exceptional dedication throughout her apprenticeship.
“Her unwavering commitment to growth is evident in her consistent efforts to enhance herself and others.
“One of Maria’s standout qualities is her proactive approach to seeking feedback. By actively soliciting input and insights from others, she displays a strong desire for continuous improvement in her leadership abilities.
“Maria’s remarkable resilience has been a cornerstone of her progress, allowing her to navigate challenges with determination and perseverance. Her joy for learning will truly be missed.”
Maria was also recognised for supporting her peers, and leading on innovative projects such as MyHeart app, PREHAB – preparing patients for surgery – and the Lipid Optimisation Service, a cholesterol pathway for patients.
“I actively promote diverse perspectives, ensure equitable opportunities, and create inclusive environments where everyone’s voice is valued and respected,” added Maria.
