Health and safety gold for Ophthalmology
Date of release: 30 July 2024
Two teams have proved they have the golden touch after receiving the highest score possible in an audit focusing on staff health and safety.
Paul Delaney, Health and Safety Officer and Staff Nurse Rosemary Al Kadi
The Mary Jones Ward and Cannock Eye Centre, at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT), achieved gold scores on their Health and Safety (H&S) Podium Audits.
Jade Tucker, Staff Nurse and H&S Representative on Mary Jones Ward said: “I feel really honoured and extremely proud that we have received the first ever gold score for health and safety. It’s a real achievement for us and the Trust.”
Rosie Al Kadi, Staff Nurse and H&S Representative at Cannock Eye Centre said: “I feel very pleased to have achieved this gold score. This wouldn’t have happened without all the hard work from everybody involved with the running of the department.”
The RWT H&S Team audits different departments in the Trust through four levels of scoring – gold, silver, bronze and Recognition Of Continual Improvement (ROCI).
The audit has four sections:- Quality Assurance of all the mandated department’s risk assessments
- A judgement of the area’s adherence to safety culture
- An assessment of its adherence to policy compliance
- An assessment of its statutory legislation adherence
Paul Delajey, Health and Safety Officer and Jade Tucker, Staff Nurse
It seeks compliance, to positively affect culture and to support all departments in understanding what their duty of care is.
Paul Delaney, Health and Safety Officer added: “It is difficult to score gold as you have to score 95% on both parts of the audit so kudos to the Mary Jones Ward and Cannock Eye Centre for achieving that.
“They did it due to their safety representatives being diligent, engaged with H&S and the audit process, and treating the role with the respect that it deserves.
“The H&S Team are focused on staff safety; they have a dedication to the safety and care of their colleagues.”
