Dr Annabel Copeman, Fran Wootton, Shelley Rose, Susan Whitehouse and Grace Boulton – all employed by The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) at New Cross Hospital – were honoured by the West Midlands School of Paediatrics. Dr Shosh Layman and Dr Cat Beatty, who have been on rotation at RWT, were also acknowledged.

There were more than 200 nominations at the event, held in the lecture theatre at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Shosh, 32, is an ST5 – Doctor in her fifth year of specialty training – and won the Best Senior Trainee award.

She was recognised for her contribution to Paediatrics and for her roles outside clinical work. Dr Beatty – also a Simulation Fellow – was highly commended.

“I was very surprised to receive the award,” said Shosh. “It means a lot to have had my outside-of-work commitments recognised, especially those involving supporting the welfare of other Paediatric Doctors in training.”

Doctors in training nominate colleagues they feel have supported or contributed to their training in a positive way.

Nominated by Shosh and Cat, Annabel, 54, a Consultant Paediatrician for more than 20 years, won the Vishna Rasiah Training Hero (Medical) Award.

“I was thrilled to be awarded this, particularly the Vishna Rasiah award. It was a complete surprise,” said Annabel.

“I’m passionate about education and in particular simulation-based education.

“More recently I’ve taken on an education role too – Deputy Clinical Tutor – and I also am Deputy Chair of the Faculty of Simulation-based Education (FoSBE).”

Fran and Shelley, both 40 and Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs) on the Neonatal Unit, and Grace, 30, an ANP in Paediatrics, were nominated for the Training Hero – Best ANP/ANNP. Fran was also highly commended.

Susan Whitehouse, Sister on the Neonatal Unit, was nominated for Training Hero Clinical (Best Nurse or Midwife) award.

Susan, 48, who has been with RWT since 2014, was described as an “exceptional natural mentor” by her anonymous nominator.

Grace, who has worked at RWT for four years, said: “It was a huge shock to be nominated.

“However the kind words of my colleagues were so lovely. I thoroughly enjoy working as an ANP with the amazing Paediatric team.”

Fran, 40, added: “I love my job and I want others to too and choose it as a career.”

Fran received two nominations, describing her as “integral, outstanding, incredibly hardworking, supportive and enthusiastic, kind and dedicated.”

Shelley, who has been with the Trust since 2004, was described as “much valued, very skilled and hardworking.”

“King trainee ANP’” Grace – nominated by Shosh – helped develop a weekly simulation teaching programme for Nursing students.
